Club Events
Zonta Woman of the Year
In March of each year, as part of our celebration of
International Women’s Day and Zonta International Rose Day, Zonta Club of Mobile recognizes a
Mobile woman
who has made extraordinary contributions of time and/or finances
to advance the status of women in our community. This year we
are proud to recognize, Terry Kearns as Zonta Club of Mobile
Woman of the Year 2009.
Terri Kearns is a graduate of The University of Alabama where
she received a BS in Home Economics/Fashion Retailing. With 20
years experience in the fashion and retailing industry, she
created workshops to meet the needs of men, women and teens
needing interview, presentation and professional image skills.
Recognizing the need of assistance to disadvantaged and
displaced females desiring to enter the workforce, she founded
Our Sisters’ Closet in 1998. This non-profit program provides
free high-quality interview and workplace clothing to
low-income, homeless and abused women to increase their
self-confidence and job opportunities.
SuccessAbility Services was added in 2005 to provide job search
and workplace competency workshops to assist disadvantaged
jobseekers. Over 3000 women, men and teens have received
services from these programs.
Terri has been married to husband, Hoagy for 30 years on March
10, and they have 2 sons, Ben and Sam.

Annual Scholarship
Each year our club awards a scholarship to a lady over the age of 25, who is working towards a degree and who is in need. This year the scholarship committee has selected Shirley King who is pursing an associate degree from Bishop State Community College as a Registered Nurse. Ms. King is 47 years old and completing her last semester. She has maintained a B average and is currently working part-time in a nursing home. She is interested in working with seniors after receiving her degree. The scholarship is for $1,000.
Service Projects
Movie Night at Penelope House - Monthly
"Movie Night" is an ongoing monthly project. We have a wonderful time!! We show a fun, kid friendly movie, serve dinner, popcorn and juice. Mobile popcorn has agreed to donate the popcorn for our movie nights and we are looking for a sponsor for dinner. This is a fun time for the children at Penelope House and a nice night off for the mothers.
Christmas Presents for Penelope Transitional Living
This year we were able to buy everything on the wish lists of
7 mothers and 13 children. You just haven't lived until
you've gone on a $1000 shopping spree for someone else.
These photos show the children's gifts. For the mothers,
we were able to buy cookware, small appliances, purses,
radios, as well as bath & body products.
A Day in the Country - May 2009
They say the third time’s the charm. That certainly held true
for our Day in the Country on May 17! Named the Kathy Everett
May Memorial Day for Sylvia Robert’s cousin who had been very
supportive and instrumental in making the event such a success
in past years.
The weather couldn’t have been nicer… sunny and cool. Around 40
participants showed up Saturday morning from Penelope
Transitional Living, Sybil Smith, and a new group called
W.I.N.N.E.R.S. (Women In Need of Nurturing, Education, and
Recovery Services). Several Zonta members were on hand to help
with baiting fish hooks, roasting wieners, serving snacks and
drinks, and enjoying a day of fun with an excited group of
children, most of whom had never been fishing or roasted wieners
before in their lives.
The afternoon was spent on a hay ride, visiting horses and
touring the horse barn. When it was time for everyone to leave,
two young girls decided they wanted to stay with us. One was
sobbing as the cars pulled away, the children just didn’t want
to leave. One little 4-year-old was there for her 2nd year. The
chaperones in her van said she talked about last year the whole
trip up to the country. Imagine the memories those children will
carry for years to come of their Day in the Country!
