UN Women
In July 2010, the UN took an historic step. The United Nations General Assembly unanimously decided to establish UN Women, the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of a strong UN organization that will be a champion to promote and advance the rights of women and girls worldwide has been a goal that Zonta International has been advocating for many years. UN Women will merge UNIFEM with its three existing sister UN entities working on gender issues — the Division for the Advancement of Women (DAW), the Office of the Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women (OSAGI), and the UN International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW).

Planning Retreat
The Planning Retreat on June 12 was a huge success! The result of the workshop was a strategic Action Plan for the 2010-2011 year with 7 goals:
- Secure a permanent meeting location, with podium and banner.
- Maintain interesting, informative, comfortable and friendly meetings.
- Institute a variety of service projects that appeal to the members.
- Increase awareness of Zonta in the Mobile area.
- Create a fund-raising plan to meet the financial needs of the club.
- Create a multifaceted plan to recruit and retain members.
- Promote a spirit of enthusiasm and teamwork among Zonta members.
August Monthly Meeting
For the August program, Ginger will show us how to dress-up ordinary flip-flops which we will donate to women in some of the organizations we serve. Bring plain, inexpensive flip-flops (any size, any color, $2-$4) to the meeting. Each month we will be collecting items needed for a specific organization. In August we will be collecting items for McKemie Place. Some of their needs include:
- Single sheets
- Pillow cases
- Towels
- Wash cloths
- Cleaning supplies
- Paper products
- Bath products
- Toiletries
- Feminine items
Please bring what you can to the August meeting. Linens may be
new or gently used. White linen are preferred, but they will
accept any color or pattern.
Board Meeting Report
On Thursday evening, July 8, we had a very productive board meeting. Decisions made at the meeting include:
- To continue meeting at Red Lobster until location can be found that meets the needs of the club members.
- The Zonta Board will meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 5:30 pm in the Business & Technology Bldg. on the Bishop State main campus.
- The Action Plan developed during the Planning Retreat was accepted.
